Discover, Learn, and Protect Minnesota’s Fungi
Mushroom forays are one of the best ways to explore the fascinating world of fungi in Minnesota. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced mycologist, our forays offer an inclusive, welcoming space to deepen your knowledge, connect with others, and contribute to citizen science—all while respecting and protecting local ecosystems. These forays are planned and led by our Foray Committee.
Our Purpose
The MMS Foray Committee collaborates to plan and lead mushroom forays that are educational, enjoyable, and environmentally responsible. We strive to create experiences that foster curiosity and respect for fungi and their habitats, ensuring our activities support the health of Minnesota’s ecosystems long after the foray is over.
Our Goals
- Provide accessible, community-based, educational , and engaging foray experiences for all members.
- Identify and secure suitable locations for legal and respectful mushroom collecting, primarily for scientific and educational purposes.
- Support citizen science by making data collection approachable and transparent, inspiring members to develop a deeper relationship with their natural surroundings.

Meet the Foray Committee

The Foray Committee is made up of dedicated MMS members who volunteer their time to organize forays and support the community. Committee members may take on multiple roles. Here are some of the current established roles:
- Chairperson: Leads the committee, schedules meetings, and represents the committee at MMS Board meetings. Creates iNaturalist projects related to forays. Oversees policies and budgeting.
- Foray Committee Secretary: Records meeting minutes.
- Volunteer Coordinator (vacant): Recruits, coordinates and ensures the preparedness of foray team volunteers. Duties currently being handled by the chairperson.
- Paul Bunyan Mushroom Chapter Forays Coordinator: Organizes Bemidji area forays.
- Foray Supplies Manager: Purchases, stores and coordinates delivery of supplies to be used at forays. This includes Foray Boxes with equipment, educational aids, blank species lists and miscellaneous supplies.
- Species Lists Manager: Compiles and maintains records of species found during forays.
Collaborators: We also work closely the Education and Funga Scientific Committees, Ticket Tailor event platform administrator, and Corresponding Secretary for member communications.
What We Do to Provide Forays for Our Members
- The Foray Committee meets first in January or February to start the process of deciding on a proposed schedule of forays for each year, including locations and dates. New locations and camping foray events can be proposed by committee members or any MMS member.
- Permit applications are submitted to the MnDNR for forays at MN State Parks locations (required). The MnDNR limits our forays at their parks to a total of 35 participants.
- Foray boxes that contain almost everything needed at forays, are checked and resupplied as needed.
- Initially, key foray team members (Foray Leader and Foray Educator) are recruited first from committee members and then from the general MMS membership based on interest, availability and previous experience. New foray leaders are provided the opportunity to be mentored at a foray or forays by an experienced MMS foray leader. Members who are interested in becoming an Educator (mushroom identification expert) can apply for our Educators-In-Training program.
- Foray Committee members annually review any changes proposed to foray sign-up rules and member attendance limits for each season: Spring, Summer, and Fall.
- Once the foray schedule is finalized by the committee, additional foray team members are assigned based first on experience and then on a willingness to learn. Foray teams are usually staffed by 5 volunteers with an average of 30 participants.
- Foray schedules and sign-up dates announcements are composed and communicated to members as early as possible prior to each season.
- Foray sign-ups and special weekend or extended weekend foray event registration is set up and managed by foray event managers using our Ticket Tailor online event platform account.
- After each foray event, foray leaders provide a brief email report to the committee chair on outcomes, educators turn in recorded species lists, and foray boxes are returned or conveyed to someone to be used at another upcoming foray.
- The Foray Committee meets sometime after the conclusion of the fall foray season to discuss notable successes and any issues that occurred.
