Los Hongos en Mexico – NAMA Mexico Foray Recap with Ron Spinosa, Aaron Berg and Heather Erickson

February in Minnesota is a time to dream of traveling somewhere warm. Join us for a virtual trip to Mexico! MMS members Aaron, Heather and Ron attended last year’s NAMA (North American Mycological Assn.) first regional foray in Mexico. They’ll share the highlights of their 6 day trip, starting and ending in Mexico City with 4 days spent in Valle De Bravo and the surrounding area learning about local indigenous mushroom culture and foraging (and eating) mushrooms in two different mountain communities.

About the speakers:

Aaron Berg‘s mushroom obsession started in 2007 when Morels came up in his backyard after cutting down an old American Elm in 2006. He has been a member of MMS for 5 years and NAMA for 2 years. He is the recording secretary on the MMS board and Interim DEI (Diversity Equity and Inclusion) Committee Chair. Aaron led the Lake Carlos State Park camping foray in 2023, and is an active member in the MMS Funga group. Heather Erickson has been a member of the MMS since 2018 and a member of the board since 2020. She is the current Events Committee Chair and newsletter editor. Heather enjoys all aspects of Mycology including its rich history. Ron Spinosa, a member of MMS for over 30 years, is a past president and the current Chair of the Education Committee. He is one of the club’s key mushroom identifiers and received the MMS Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. He has been a NAMA member and Cultivation Committee Chair for many of those years, and is the winner of their Knighton Service Award in 2011.
