Help Clean Up Our Adopted Highway!

MMS members, we’re excited to announce that the Minnesota Mycological Society has adopted a section of University Avenue between Hwy 10 and 109th Avenue in Blaine, Minnesota, as part of the Adopt a Highway program! On Saturday, October 19th, 2024, we’re holding a clean-up day starting at 9 a.m., and we need your help to keep our community and environment beautiful. Our goal is to finish by noon—though with enough hands on deck, it could go even faster!

What is the Adopt a Highway Program?
The Adopt a Highway program is an initiative by MnDOT that encourages volunteer groups like ours to help maintain the cleanliness of Minnesota’s highways. By participating, you’ll directly contribute to a cleaner, greener environment. The program benefits everyone by keeping our roadsides litter-free, saving taxpayer money, and showing that Minnesotans truly care about their state.

How You Can Help
Our goal is to pick up litter and ensure our adopted highway remains pristine. We have committed to cleaning up our section at least twice a year, and our first clean-up is on Saturday, October 19th. All necessary supplies, including safety vests and trash bags, will be provided by MnDOT.

Important Volunteer Guidelines

• Volunteers must be at least 12 years old, with those working along interstates needing to be 18 or older
• Wear appropriate gear: work clothes, gloves, sturdy shoes, hats, and long sleeves.
• Bring a first aid kit, water, and a cell phone.
• Stay safe! Face oncoming traffic, avoid hazards, and wear your Adopt a Highway safety vest at all times.
• MnDOT will pick up the trash bags we leave behind.

For your safety and others, do not volunteer if you are sick, and please follow all guidelines provided.

To join the effort, please sign up today! Detailed information on meeting locations and our plan for the day will be sent to members that sign up three days before the clean-up. Together, we can make a positive impact on our environment. Let’s show that the Minnesota Mycological Society not only loves fungi but also cares about keeping our world clean.
