Forays Far and Wide – East to West

Three MMS members will share pictures and stories from three very different forays attended in 2024. David King traveled to Japan, where he connected with a local University who shared their love of mushrooms and their local hunting spots with him. Kathy Yerich attended the NAMA Regional Foray in Arizona and found mushroom species she’s only read about in books and ate them in specially created dishes. Ross Haugberg was the 2024 MMS Marek Scholarship winner, attending NAMA Camp in Randle, Oregon. Come hear about highlights from his trip, learn more about the Marek Scholarship and where and when the 2025 NAMA Foray will be held!

About the presenters:

David King joined the MMS at the State Fair in 2019, attended his first foray three days later and has not looked back. He and wife Gretchen discovered that mushroom foraging was a great way to weather a pandemic. David is retired and forages whenever conditions seem favorable. In addition to serving on the MMS Board as member-at-large in 2023-24, David has volunteered at forays, and is developing a new educational tool to help members develop mushroom identification skills.

Kathy Yerich has been a member of MMS since 2009, joined NAMA shortly after and has served on the board of both for many years. Co-author of the local field guide, Mushrooms of the Upper Midwest, she loves attending the NAMA Forays, teaching people about Minnesota mushrooms, and learning about mushrooms from other regions. She is enchanted with the lifelong friendships found through these forays, and thrilled with the success of the Marek Scholarship, honoring the memory of one of those friends.

Ross Haugberg is an avid forager and mushroom enthusiast with a passion for exploring the natural world. In his three years as a member of the MMS, he has enjoyed helping with forays, learning from experts, and deepening his connection to the local mycological community. This autumn, thanks to being awarded the Marek Turowski Memorial Scholarship, Ross attended the 2024 NAMA foray in Washington state. The experience immersed him in the vibrant world of mycology on a national scale, and he’s excited to share stories, insights, and photos from this unforgettable event in his presentation.
