Linwood Lake is part of a regional park in Anoka County. The area near the lake access is a relatively small park area with mixed woods, but more pines then many of our other forays. Trails are flat and relatively easy, but they can be muddy. The trail near the lake is in a boggy habitat with …read more tamarack (larch) trees. Suillus grevelii and Suillus spectabilis are usually found there. Both species are edible. Stump Dumplings, Entoloma abortivum/Armillaria, may still be around, along with assorted late fall mushrooms.
Directions:  Take I35 north to the Wyoming (#135) exit. Go left (west) on Hwy 22 about 5 miles. Look for a sign for Linwood Lake Landing on the left side of road (before you get to the large “Linwood Pizza Man” statue and outlet). Turn left into the Linwood Lake Landing parking area. It is recommended to check traffic on your route before you leave, and aim to arrive early. No entry fee or parking permit required.

This location is just north of St. Francis, MN about an hour’s drive from the twin cities. Primitive woods with some trails (unmarked, no trail map), and no bathroom or other facilities. The terrain is flat and not challenging.
After check-in and instructions by the foray leader, the group will …read more split up and head in different directions to begin the hunt. Everyone will return to the parking area around 11:30 am where we will begin our identification session. Mushrooms we may find here include hens, chicken, honeys, stump dumplings, puffballs and oysters in particular; in addition to amanitas and many interesting non-edibles.
Directions: Go north on I-94W. When approaching the 694 interchange, stay left to continue west on I-94W. Take the exit for US-169N. After crossing the Mississippi River, continue on Ferry St. in Anoka which becomes Hwy 47 after you pass over Hwy 10. Stay on Hwy 47 for 17.8 miles to 261st Ave NW (Isanti County 8). Turn left (west) and go 1.4 mi and park on the left side (south) across from Zuni St. NW. It is recommended to check traffic on your route before you leave, and aim to arrive early. No entry fee or parking permit required.

There is a variety of terrain so be prepared for all types of challenges. We will be looking for a variety of edible fall mushrooms and many other interesting fungi and some that are dangerous, especially a “sandy” Amanita that is under reported and poorly documented.
Directions: Go north on Hwy 169 …read more to Zimmerman MN. Take a left (west) on Hwy 4 and go 5.4 miles west. Turn left at the campground sign (168th St.) and go 0.4 miles. Turn right at Prairie’s Edge Wildlife Drive and go 0.6 miles, and then left at the Ann Lake Day Use sign. Go to the end of the road.

We will initially check-in and meet at the Little Lake Mary parking area. Following our foray briefing we will carpool to the group camp parking area where we will search the area for an hour to 1 ½ hours and return to the Little Lake Mary parking area picnic tables to begin assessing what we have found. If time permits we may also search that area for additional specimens.
Directions: The park may be reached from the south via I-94 (exit 193) at Hwy 25, south to Chelsea Rd to Hwy 39 west and Wright County Rd 111, or from the north via I-94 (exit 183) to Hwy 8, County Rd 39 and County Rd 111.

Continue to follow MN-95 E/St Croix Trail (around 9 miles) then turn left at Almelund onto Park Trail to Park entrance (about 2.5 miles). Meet at 9:00 am. The parking lots where we will meet are just south of Nevers Dam trail and east of Old Logging Trail. Just across the paved trail, is a picnic area and bathrooms.

The Foray Leader will give some opening announcements including introducing the other volunteers. The attendees will then be separated into foray assistant groups and head out. Foray assistants will lead their groups looking for mushrooms and return to the ID session area at 12:00pm.
 
Directions: Fort Snelling State Park is located on Post Road off State Highway 5, just west of the main terminal exit for the International Airport. Drive in to the park nearly as far as you can go by car. Meet in the parking lot by the Thomas Savage Interpretive Center.

Foray Description (used in confirmation emails):
The edible mushroom of interest for this foray is Chanterelles. St. Croix State Park is a large park with miles of trails. Phones are likely to not work except at the entrance. There is only …read more room for a half dozen or so cars so more cars will need to park along the road. From here we will walk to the foray hunting grounds. There are picnic tables and a porta-potty down by the river and this is where we will review what we find at the end.
Directions: From the St Croix State Park office take the right at the intersection and follow this road for about 6 miles crossing Hay Creek, Sand Creek and Lost Creek. You will eventually come to a “Y” with the road to the right leading to the fire tower…you need to take the fork to the left and follow it until you see a turn to the right 1¼ miles or so down the road, which may or may not be listed as the road to Maple Island…regardless it is the only right turn you will see…take this right and follow the road about 2½ miles until you see a small gravel/dirt parking area on the left…this is the parking for the Big Eddy fishing area on the Kettle River. If you get to the fire tower you went right instead of left or end up at Maple Island you went too far and need to back-track. Big Eddy does show up on Google Maps but does not give the park roads names and will not route you to it. The only way you can enter this park is through the main entrance. Bing Maps will provide a route if you drop a pin and drag the route so it goes through the park entrance. The park road it will route you through by default is closed.
A MN State Park Vehicle Permit is required to park ($35/annual $7/day). State parks are very busy this year so you may need to arrive early to snag a parking spot.  If you carpool to the foray, follow CDC recommended ride sharing guidelines.

This picnic and foray is in place of our normal meeting – there will be no Zoom meeting. We will not be providing food for this event as we have in the past, nor encouraging sharing of food while COVID is still a concern. You are welcome to bring your own food and refreshments to enjoy at the foray. …read more This park has roughly 1.6 miles of easy and level trails. Terrain is mostly level with some paved, gravel, and packed dirt paths.
Directions: The park is located 12 miles north of Stillwater, just north of the town of Marine on St. Croix. The park entrance is located right on State Highway 95. After turning onto the park road the ranger station is immediately on your right. Meet at the picnic shelter overlooking Lake Alice near the sand volleyball courts.

Directions: Take I-35W N, I-35 N and US-8 E to Lofton Ave in Chisago City. Continue on Lofton Ave. Take 375th St to MN-95 E in Amador Township 16 min (13.0 mi). Turn right onto MN-95 E. Turn left and drive into the park. The parking …read more lots where we will meet are just south of Nevers Dam trail and east of Old Logging Trail. Just across the paved trail, is a picnic area and bathrooms.
We will be looking for a variety of spring mushrooms including morels (Morchella spp.) and Pheasantback (Cerioporus squamosus). One group will be staying along the Old Logging Trail heading north and branching out into the woods, and the other group heading south and doing the same. The northern route is easier terrain, while the southern route has more ravines and uneven terrain.
