MMS Meeting
Sorting Out Russula
It is easy to dismiss any red, fragile mushroom as “one of the red Russula”, but can we do better? There are a few features that can help us to get closer to understanding this genus. Join us as we discuss the Russula of Eastern North America. You may learn something new, or you may leave knowing less than you did before the lecture! It’s a baffling group of mushrooms, but they don’t all need to be completely ignored.
Tavis is an amateur mycologist from northern Wisconsin, where he has been studying fungi for over 40 years. Tavis is the author of MUSHROOM CULTIVATION (Quarto, 2018); THE BEGINNERS GUIDE TO MUSHROOMS (Quarto, 2020); and GROW YOUR OWN MUSHROOMS (New Shoe Press, 2024). He is currently working on a two-volume book, THE MUSHROOMS OF WISCONSIN. He teaches mycology classes in about 35 schools around the Upper Midwest and focuses most on the genus Russula. Tavis currently serves as vice president of the Wisconsin Mycological Society. For more on his mushrooms and where to find them, go to Tavis’s Mushrooms on Facebook; https://www.facebook.com/mushroomtavis.
